Ofqual's letter to schools and colleges on exams and grading arrangements in summer 2024
Published: Wednesday 24 Apr 2024
Chief Regulator Sir Ian Bauckham CBE shares the plans and support for this summer including:
- preparing for summer exams and assessments – guidance on maintaining the security and integrity of exams and assessments, and cyber security, along with reminders about contingency planning
- grading arrangements in 2024: GCSEs, AS and A-levels, and Vocational, Technical and other Qualifications (VTQs) – Ofqual confirms that grading has returned to normal and this will continue for future years – they anticipate that outcomes in summer 2024 will be similar to those in summer 2023 with variations in outcomes likely similar to those typically seen in previous years. This year, exam boards will also have a term-time checkpoint for Level 1/2, Level 2 and Level 3 VTQs to confirm which students are expecting a result in August. The checkpoint is to make sure exam boards have the information they need to deliver results on time
- resources to support schools and colleges in preparing students for assessments – Ofqual has produced resources to support schools and colleges in preparing their learners for their exams and assessments. This includes their 2024 Student Guide and 2024 Guide for Schools and Colleges, which answers some of the main questions that we are asked by schools and colleges
- results days and next steps – results days will be on 15 August and 22 August, and Ofqual has some guidance on predicted grades.
