Exam results 2023 – how they will be graded
Published: Friday 14 Jul 2023
Ofqual has published a blog on how exams for GCSEs, AS and A-levels, and VTQs will be graded for 2023.
This year GCSEs, AS and A-levels are returning to pre-pandemic standards, with protection built into the grading process to recognise the disruption that learners have faced.
To protect students against the disruption of recent years, and in case students' performance is slightly lower than before the pandemic, senior examiners will use the grades achieved by previous cohorts of pupils, along with prior attainment data, to inform their decisions about where to set grade boundaries.

Grading of vocational technical and other qualifications (VTQs)
In 2021 to 2022, Ofqual allowed awarding organisations to adapt their assessments, so that students studying vocational and technical qualifications could get the support they needed as we emerged from the pandemic. These adaptations were designed to free up time to recover lost teaching and learning. For many students, results from those assessments will be used towards qualifications this year.
Exam boards are expected to take account of the approach, including in relation to grading, used in general qualifications so that students taking VTQs are not advantaged or disadvantaged in comparison.
