77989 MAKING A SIMPLE KITE

In successfully completing this unit, the Learner will have

Evidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1select suitable materials for making the kite, ie sticky tape, tissue paper, diihedral joint, 'D' ring, dowel, string, flying line and handleSummary sheet
2use the tissue paper to make a square sail measuring 100cms x 100cmsSummary sheet
3use a ruler and pencil to find the midpoint at the top and bottom of the sail and make a markSummary sheet
4measure 15cms down from the top edge of the sail on both sides and make a markSummary sheet
5draw a line to connect each of the midpoint marks to the 15cm marks so that a kite shape is formedSummary sheet
6attach a length of sticky tape along each of the pencil lines to add strengthSummary sheet
7cut along the pencil lines with a pair of scissors to form the kite shapeSummary sheet
8decorate the kite sailSummary sheet and/or photograph(s)
9select a piece of dowel and place along the length of the sail, mark with a pencil and cut to lengthSummary sheet
10slide the dihedral joint along the cut dowel to a length of 15cmsSummary sheet
11lay the spine of the dihedral joint flat on the reverse of the sail so that the two holes are facing upwards and are level with the widest point of the sailSummary sheet
12insert two pieces of dowel into the dihedral joint to make the cross spars and cut to lengthSummary sheet
13attach the spine and spars to the sail using sticky tapeSummary sheet
14make a small hole on each side of the spine immediately below the dihedral jointSummary sheet
15make another small hole on each side of the spine 15cms from the bottom of the sailSummary sheet
16cut two lengths of string each measuring 1.2m and pass them through the holesSummary sheet
17raise the piece of string nearest to the dihedral joint to an angle of 45 degrees and attach both pieces of string to a 'D' ringSummary sheet
18attach a flying line and handle to the 'D' ringSummary sheet and/or photograph(s)
